50 days to go
Wednesday 21st April 2010 marked 50 days to go to the 2010 Soccer World Cup, although Kimberly was the chosen host city to celebrate this milestone, The Workshop Shopping Centre decided to show our support, give back to the community and generally create an awesome buzz and hype around this milestone event.
The day’s activities consisted of:
- A DJ – who really got people excited about the World Cup as it draws closer.
- The DJ also ran a soccer quiz, where soccer related questions were asked, if shoppers got them right they were rewarded with a workshop gift (bag, water bottle, wallet). Connections and African Bank also sponsored on the spot prizes valued at R 1500.00 collectively.
- We had two amazing soccer tricksters who really wowed shoppers with their out of this world soccer tricks, if shoppers could mimic the trick they got rewarded.
- There was a face painter, who painted the SA flag or 2010 or a soccer ball onto people’s faces / hands for free.
- The were also vuvuzela blowing competitions and who can keep the ball in the air the longest without using their hands, as well as save the goal and try to kick the ball into the goal, winners from these competitions were rewarded with a free gift.
The event was a great success, with a lot of participation from shoppers.

Unite Mzansi Unite Adidas Truck Tour – March 2010
Confirmation of the event was received on Wednesday, all media contacts across Durban where immediately invited, Durban Tourism, Tourism KZN, The Mayor and City Manager were invited, we tried to get Jacob Zuma but he wasn’t available.
The event was extremely well received by both tenants and shoppers, on the Friday numerous of the tenants showed their support and went up to sign the jersey amongst the thousands of fans. It was record time on Friday, we did 4838 signatures between 08h30 – 17h00, their previous record was 3000 in one day, it took them three months to break this record – absolutely phenomenal!!
Saturday was a bit quieter, however we achieved 3366 signatures and we had the presence of the eThekwini Municipality Mayor, Councilor Obed Mlaba on Saturday. This was fantastic and the benefits of this visit will be invaluable for the centre going forward.
Feedback from Adidas was “That is a total (8204) in two days what we normally make in one whole week.” “This was a blessing in disguise to come and set up here.”
Due to the late confirmation, we were not in a position to put in any formal advertising, however a pre press release was sent out to all media representatives with their invite.

SA Tourism Shot Left Campaign
SA Tourism's Sho't Left campaign aims to promote a culture of local holiday travel, targeting ordinary South Africans and their families who have a desire to see more of the country but don't know where to go.
The campaign is aimed at young upcoming individuals, independent couples and families, with research into the domestic tourism market indicating that over 5-million South Africans have both the resources and the desire to travel.
The campaign promoted local domestic travel, Soccer Worldcup and Fly the flag, entertainment on the day also consisted of the Diski dancers and soccer tricksters. "Diski" is township slang for football, and this jive translates the sport's moves into dance. |

The Workshop Shopping Centre – Cleaning up our Building
Shoppers to the Workshop over the past two weeks would have noticed the installation of colorful international flags which have been positioned on the external flag poles. These flags are part of our Cleanup Campaign and more specifically the ‘Cleaning up of our Building’ aspect.
The Workshop Shopping Centre is a historical building containing an exciting melting pot of African, Indian and European cultures, as well as the benefits of a modern shopping centre. The centre attracts numerous international visitors annually as well as delegates that flock to the ICC and DEC for various international conferences and events. The flags add a touch of international flavor to the centre.
With all the international events taking place during the year and with 2010 around the corner, these flags also serve as welcoming to our international visitors. |

Clean up Your Cupboard
The Workshop Shopping Centre co-ordinated a month long Clean up Your Cupboard campaign during July 2009. All items collected were handed over to Umthombo Street Children, ‘Umthombo is a voice from the streets. It is a unique South African street children organization led predominantly by former street children. Umthombo aims to change the way that society perceives and treats street children through educating society as to the realities of the street child experience and through developing and implementing informed, working strategies to address the issue in South African cities. We had a fantastic response from the public, says Nishtha Sanichur, marketing coordinator for The Workshop Shopping Centre, and we would like to thank all those who contributed and made this drive a success. |
